My name is Melissa and I am a 20 something blogger who lives in Portland, OR. Outside of Planty Mel I have a full time job, but sharing the word about the benefits of living a plant based lifestyle is so important to me!
I have a wonderful husband (who is also plant based) and two kitties who mean the world to me!
Before a Plant Based Life
Let’s go back to the early days, because I think it’s important to understand where people come from. I grew up in Southern Oregon where hunting and fishing were a normal occurrence in my family. We ate meat at almost every meal and even made fun of vegetarians while I was growing up. I would be the first to tell you that I never – in my wildest dreams – thought that I would end up being plant based.
Fast forward to 6 years ago and I found my way to veganism when I was diagnosed with a genetic mutation, Li Fraumeni Syndrome. This mutation could cause me to develop multiple tumors and cancers throughout my life. Being held at the whim of a medical issue is so scary and making big life changes at the same time is daunting. If you’re in that same boat I completely understand. I was terrified, but I was willing to do whatever it took to stay healthy.
I immediately hit the books, figuring out what I could do to take my health into my own hands. I didn’t adopt a plant based lifestyle right away. I stumbled around with pescetarianism (consuming fish but no other meat) and vegetarianism (consuming dairy and eggs but no meat) and kept trying to learn more. My husband was actually the first one to bring up a plant-based life!
All that said, in my research, I found what I think are the best ways to nourish your body. These include avoiding carcinogenic food by following a plant-based lifestyle, move your body every day, and keep your mental health in check. So in 2014, I began my journey into my planty lifestyle and I’ve never looked back.
Sharing It All With You
In 2018, I decided that I wanted to start Planty Mel as a resource to anyone wanting to transition to a plant based lifestyle. There are so many reasons for people to transition to this lifestyle. Whether it be personal health, environmental health, or animal welfare. For me, it began as a personal health journey and has transitioned into a combination of all of the aforementioned reasons.
On my blog, you will find delicious, plant-based recipes and tips to help you transition to a plant based lifestyle in a simple way. I hope that you subscribe and stick around for the long run.
