I love Ikea Veggie Dogs! They’re only 75 cents at the hot deli and they taste so good! The flavor combination that Ikea created is perfect and I wanted to recreate it at home.
I set out to make a perfect recreation of the Ikea Veggie Dogs and this recipe did not disappoint!
If you haven’t had an Ikea Veggie Dog, let me fill you in. The “hot dog” part of their veggie dog is similar to their veggie balls, a very vegetable tasting sausage. It’s really good and peeps that are skeeved out by fake meat would love it!
And even though their sausage is good, it’s all about the toppings! They made an excellent flavor combination with spicy brown mustard, pickled red cabbage, and fried onions – and it’s amazing. Everything plays so well together and the end result is delectable.
For my homemade version, I opted to buy vegan sausages and make my own pickled red cabbage and fried onions. If you’re not wanting to prepare any components of this dish these are also easily store-bought.
The pickled red cabbage is delicious and has the perfect sweet tanginess. And the fried onions are so easy to make and much better than the packaged variety.
Let’s get into how I brought this recreation to life!
Pickled Red Cabbage
You will start this recipe by making the pickled red cabbage because it needs time to marinate and do its thing in the refrigerator.
It’s actually very simple and requires only 4 ingredients. It’s honestly a great recipe to keep on hand if you love have pickled cabbage in the fridge. I used the extra on salads and bowls!
To start, the cabbage is sliced as thin as possible. If you’re brave enough to use a mandolin (godspeed) then go for it. The lost tip of my right ring finger doesn’t like them.
Once your cabbage is nice and thin simply add everything to a large bowl and combine well.
You can then set the cabbage in the refrigerator for 1-2 hours (depending on how thin you slice it). Don’t forget to stir every half hour. It’s not critical, but it does help everything evenly pickle.
Fried Onion Strings
I also used to buy the premade fried onion bits from the store, but one Thanksgiving I made them on my own and realized how easy it was.
You will start by slicing the onions thinly and dredging them in flour. Easy peasy.
Next, bring a pan to medium-high heat, add in an inch of oil and fry away! I fry about half of the onions at a time so that the pan isn’t crowded.
I recommend using tongs to get the onions out of the oil. If you watched my YouTube video for this recipe, you will see that I had a tiny fiasco when removing the onions. So, yes, I recommend tongs.
When the onions are fried all that’s left to do is plate up!
Ikea Veggie Dogs
After you’ve prepared the pickled red cabbage and fried onions it’s very easy to wrap this one up!
Simply warm up your vegan sausages and add them to hot dog buns.
Top them with a good amount of the spicy brown mustard.
Next, add on the pickled red cabbage.
Finally, top your veggie dogs with the fried onions.
Take a bite and enjoy your delicious masterpiece!

- 4 hot dog buns
- 4 vegan sausages
- Spicy brown mustard
- Pickled red cabbage
- Fried onion strings
- ¼ of a red cabbage
- ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
- ¼ cup water
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 onion
- ½ cup flour
- Vegetable oil
Remove the outer leaves and rinse the red cabbage
Cut the cabbage in half and then in half again
Keep one ¼ of the red cabbage and store the remaining ¾ in your fridge for another dish
Slice the red cabbage into thin strips
Add to a large bowl
Pour vinegar and water over the red cabbage
Add the sugar and salt to the bowl
Mix well to combine
Put in the fridge for 1-2 hours, stirring every half hour
Thinly slice the onion
Add the flour to a small mixing bowl
Put the onion in the flour and mix to cover all of the onion in flour
Bring a saucepan to medium-high heat and add an inch of oil
Add half the onions to the pan and fry for about 3 minutes
Carefully remove the onions from the pan and set on a paper towel-lined plate
Sprinkle with salt
Repeat with remaining half of onions
Assemble the veggie dogs by adding a vegan hot dog to a hot dog bun
Add on the spicy brown mustard
Add on the pickled red cabbage
Top with the fried onion strings
