Spring 2019 Updates

Welcome Friends!

Can you believe that spring is already here!? It feels like I woke up and the flowers were suddenly blooming. It’s feels especially fast because it was just snowing here in Portland and then it got up to almost 70 degrees a couple of days here already. We only get so much sunshine here, so when it shines we take advantage! For me it’s as simple as going on a lot of long walks. Soaking up some free vitamin D. Love it.

This spring is bringing a lot of activities to my life and I wanted to give you an update with everything that’s happening. It feels really awesome to have this platform where I can speak with all of you amazing people and you want to hear what I have to say. So thank you for tuning in and I hope my spring updates can inspire or excite you in some way.

Travel

I love travelling. It’s my most favorite thing to do! You learn so much about the world and yourself by travelling and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to travel as often as I have. In April we’re going to a country we’ve never been to and I’m very excited!

Can you guess where we’re going? Well, lucky for you I won’t keep you waiting. In April we are packing our bags and making our way to China! I am so excited because I lived in Japan for a little bit in 2013 and I didn’t get a chance to make it over to China. I honestly wasn’t sure if we would make it back over to Asia so I’m happy that we are getting the chance.

We booked our trip through Groupon and it was a steal. I am going to be writing a blog post on the process of purchasing the Groupon, the total cost, and what we thought of the trip. I know that this will be so helpful because I had a hard time finding reviews and information on this trip.

Because I’ve travelled so much I am pretty relaxed about the whole process. I used to plan packing lists and create itineraries but after going on so many trips to so many countries I am really chill about the process now. I usually pack the night before or day of and I’m much more willing to go with the flow. We definitely had to go with the flow with this trip and I’m excited to see how it turns out.

Music

In May we are seeing The Wild Reeds in Portland. Erik (my husband) and I have been getting so into indie folk music for the past couple years and this is one of the bands that we are both pretty obsessed with. They are just so incredibly talented. I find myself mumbling their lyrics as I move around the house all the time. I can’t recommend them enough.

Check out their NPR Tiny Desk Radio here.

An exciting feat in the world of music for me is that I’ve been learning to play the drums! Erik is an excellent drummer and he’s been playing for 15+ years, so I got lucky with a built in teacher. I’ve tried to learn beats before but it never worked for me. My brain couldn’t comprehend all the moving pieces. It was like the pat your head and rub your stomach thing for me.

Well, a few weeks ago I picked up the sticks and something clicked. I nailed my first beat and started working on putting together some fills. I’m still a baby drum noob, but it’s been a lot of fun. I’m definitely lucky to have Erik to teach me all his skills. Well, *some* of his skills.

Balancing Stress

Something that I have made a huge priority in my life is balancing stress. And I don’t mean to say that I’m any good at it, I’m just trying. I have a morning routine that makes me feel so amazing and starts my day off on the right foot. I wake up and make myself some warm lemon water to rehydrate. While I sip on my water I write in a journal for about 30 minutes. I try to focus on gratitude journaling, but sometimes I just write whatever I’m feeling, even if that means complaining for half an hour to a piece of paper. It’s better to get it out!

Then after I’m done journaling I do yoga. Yes, yoga! I never thought I would be the kind of lady to get up and do some yoga. It seemed so pointless to me. If I want to workout I want to burn some calories! Well, I learned how to do yoga “the right way” for me. I finally understand the mental and physical connection yoga provides and it’s so balancing and rewarding. I love yoga that burns and makes me breath. I’ve learned how to flow and it’s incredible.

I picked up these skills from Yoga With Adriene, the YouTube yoga goddess. I did the Dedicate series and it taught me so much. If you want to get a basic sense of yoga check out the Foundation day. I learned so much just from that day.

If you’re not familiar with Adriene she posts weekly yoga videos and at the beginning of each year she does a 30 day yoga journey for everyone. I loved the program so much. It taught me a lot about breathing correctly, submitting to the flow and how to bring what I learned from yoga into my “real life” to combat stress and anxiety. Some well timed breathing can do a lot for your body and mind!

I also started a vitamin regimen. I was taking vitamin B12 and D sporadically and I wanted to get more consistent about it. I now take a multivitamin, B complex, vegan omega and probiotic every day. And I have been feeling pretty great! In addition to vitamins I have been taking ashwagandha. Ash-wah-what?

Ashwagandha is an adaptogen that helps with managing stress. It won’t make you a stress master all of a sudden, but for me it helps me feel more level all day. I don’t feel the sudden bursts of stress or anxiety where my heart will race and my face gets flushed nearly as often. I feel like I’m more capable at managing how I react to situations when I take it.

I’ve been taking this one I found on Amazon and it’s working well for me.

Clean Beauty

The last thing I want to talk about is clean beauty. I am a huge fan of quick and easy vegan drugstore makeup, but I’ve been getting more into clean beauty lately. I’ve started to realize that the quality of products that I use is so important. And while I love a cheap option I want to gravitate towards products that are the healthiest for me.

That being said I want to dip my toes more into some brands that have skin loving, clean beauty products. Some brands I’ve been really interested in are The Ordinary, 100% Pure and Pacifica.

I am so intrigued by The Ordinary. But also so intimidated. I need to sit down and do some research on what the different products do. If you’re unfamiliar with The Ordinary the products are just named with the main active ingredient. No fancy titles like “Lucious Moisture Cream” – I made that up, hit me up marketing campaigns, I got all kinds of nuggets. Anyways, you have to research what your buying, but because of all that the products are affordable and high quality.

100% Pure is fruit pigmented makeup and skincare and that’s just too cool. It’s a little bit pricier, and that’s the main reason I haven’t purchased anything from them yet. Because I’m looking into clean beauty much more right now I’m definitely more willing to spend the monies on this though. I will definitely do a review if/when I do.

Lastly Pacifia already has my heart. I’ve written about them in my drugstore makeup post and shared their products on my Instagram so often. They are just such good quality and I can get them at Target. Excellent. I love being able to walk in and shop from my favorite brands and walk out with good products for a good price.

My favorite Pacifica products are the kale detox makeup remover and face wash. I’ve seen such an improvement in my skin since using this product. I also love the mascara and I’ve been digging the concealer. I want to get my hands on their new Vitamin Sea serum as well!
