Vegan Flautas with Jackfruit Chicken and Cheese

I was on a mission to make some next level vegan flautas. And luckily for you, and me, I succeeded! I made the most awesome vegan chicken and cheese flautas! They come together in just 30 minutes and they are meaty, cheesy and incredibly tasty.

I used jackfruit as a base, and it really is the best shredded chicken substitute in my opinion. Now, if you don’t think you like jackfruit, let me introduce you to my jackfruit chicken recipe. My own husband doesn’t love jackfruit and he thought that this vegan chicken was fantastic.

So buckle up while I show you how to make jackfruit taste good and deliver some amazing vegan flautas!

Flautas or Taquitos?

Is it a flauta or is it a taquito? The world, outside of Mexico, may never know! Let’s shed some light on this question.

A flauta is a burrito sized soft flour tortilla that is filled with delicious ingredients, fried to crispy perfection, and then topped with sour cream, guacamole, salsa, etc. A taquito is very similar except a smaller corn tortilla is the ingredient vessel.

If you watch my YouTube video where I make these flautas you may have noticed that I called them taquitos until the end. And I’m still on the fence about if these are flautas or taquitos!

I think they lean more toward the flauta definition because of my use of flour tortillas, but they are smaller like taquitos.

To make matters even more confusing, I didn’t call these flautas or taquitos growing up. We called them crispitos and I just remember that they were delicious and I wanted to recreate them.

Quite frankly I don’t give a damn what they’re called. They’re tasty and that’s all I wanted them to be!

Vegan Flautas with Jackfruit Chicken & Cheese

A good vegan flautas recipe needs a delicious filling, and I went traditional here. I used to love chicken and cheese flautas – er, crispitos, as we called them – when I was a kid. They were crispy on the outside, hot and delicious on the inside and they had a ton of gooey, stringy cheese.

Now, making that into a vegan chicken flautas dish might sound a little complicated, but I promise it’s not that hard.

First up, we gotta make some jackfruit turn into vegan chicken. How do you do it, they ask? Well, all you need is some seasoning baby! People don’t like meat because of the flesh, they like meat because of the delicious seasonings and flavors that are put on the flesh! *lightbulb*

So I made an awesome seasoning blend that takes basic jackfruit from, well, fruit, to next level vegan chicken. And that’s the base for these vegan jackfruit flautas!

Then you need a good vegan cheese. I’m loving Violife cheddar, Good Planet Foods cheddar, but there are also the classics like Follow Your Heart and Daiya. Pick your *vegan* cheese and you’re solid.

The Technique

Making the actual flautas is pretty simple. If you’re a visual learner watch my YouTube video, I show you exactly how I roll these up.

You just put some jackfruit in the tortilla, not too much, but it depends on the size of the tortillas you’re using. Then add a sprinkle of cheese – or more than a sprinkle – they’re your flautas after all!

Next, you’ll carefully roll them up. I like to put all of my fillings in the center of the tortilla, roll the back part forward to cover the fillings, and then tightly roll it up. You can then insert some toothpicks to make sure that the flauta doesn’t unravel on you.

Simple, simple!

The Recipe

When you have your flautas all assembled it’s easy street from here on out! You simply need to heat some oil over medium-high heat, place the flautas seam side down (aka the part where the tortilla ends), cook for 2-3 minutes, carefully flip and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.

And that’s it, now you go to nom town!

Delicious, crispy flautas with a meaty vegan jackfruit chicken and vegan cheese

Jackfruit Chicken
  • 1 20 oz can Shredded Jackfruit
  • 1 cup vegan chicken broth (I like better than bullion)
  • 2 tsp poultry seasoning
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp pepper
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ¼ tsp paprika
  • ¼ tsp onion powder
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 6-10 Soft taco tortillas
  • 1-2 cups vegan cheese
  • Optional toppings salsa, sour cream, guacamole
Jackfruit Chicken
  1. Open and drain the liquid from a can of jackfruit

  2. Place the jackfruit chunks in a bowl and shred them apart with your hands (you can also use a fork or a food processor)
  3. Rinse the jackfruit really well
  4. Drain the water from the jackfruit

  5. Place the jackfruit in a bowl

  6. Prepare vegan chicken broth

  7. Pour broth over jackfruit and let soak about 5 minutes
  8. Add poultry seasoning, salt, pepper, garlic powder, paprika, onion powder and fresh garlic to the jackfruit
  9. Mix to coat the jackfruit evenly
  1. Lay out a tortilla
  2. Add some of the jackfruit chicken to the middle of the tortilla (if you’re using small soft taco tortillas use about ⅓ cup and if you’re using large burrito tortillas use ¾-1 cup)
  3. Add ⅛-¼ cup of vegan cheese

  4. Roll the back of the tortilla over the filling and then continue to tightly roll all of the way
  5. Stick two toothpicks through the flauta so it doesn’t open up
  6. Bring ¼ inch of oil to medium high heat
  7. Add one or two flautas (depending on the size of your pan) seam side down
  8. Cook for 2-3 minutes until golden brown
  9. Carefully flip over
  10. Cook on second side for additional 2-3 minutes until golden brown
  11. Continue cooking all flautas
  12. Serve hot with salsa, sour cream, and/or guacamole
